Brown Widow Experience

September 10, 2014  •  2 Comments
A female brown widow earns her reputation. Here she has killed her suitor. She wraps him in silk and attaches him to a cricket. Another male comes in and partakes of the cricket while carefully avoiding the female. Perhaps he will be her new suitor.

Sights of August 2014

September 01, 2014  •  Leave a Comment
I spent August very local, but here in Southern California there is always so much to do within just a few miles. I am always reminded as to why I should get down to Huntington Beach Central Park and Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve just 12 miles away. In addition to local parks, I went whale watching and was not disappointed. We saw blue whales, hum...

Sights of July 2014

July 31, 2014  •  2 Comments
I have been enjoying the heart (and heat) of summer. I went on my regular butterfly count with Irvine Ranch Conservancy and also on one on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Needless to say, I saw lots of butterflies! I also visited the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum for an event in honor of National Moth Week, but I shot more beetles than moths. I...

Sights of June 2014

July 01, 2014  •  Leave a Comment
In May I was very busy, I finished up my entomology class, was heavily involved in an insect study for the nature center, and wrapped up a major spring cleaning effort around my house. This month was time for a break. In June, I wrapped up the insect study, caught my breath, and spent more time with family. No butterfly count. No desert trips. The...

Sights of May 2014

I think I am becoming the bionic woman. I have a camera attached to me almost all the time. I don't mind if a miss a shot and delete many shots. I just enjoy looking at nature and taking pictures. What can be more enjoyable to the soul than watching baby birds, discovering a new insect, smelling sage, and feeling the sun? Perhaps sharing the experi...

Sights of April 2014

May 03, 2014  •  Leave a Comment
April is typically a great month for birds, flowers, and insects and this year is no exception. My only regret is that I didn't get out more! I have been working on home improvement projects so my time outdoors was limited. In addition to my usual endeavors, I began an insect study at the nature center comparing a restored native grassland to a no...

Spring has sprung. Flowers, birds, insects, and spiders are all around. For the full series of photos check out this page: http://kimssight.zenfolio.com/new_mar_2014 There were lots of butterflies seen during my monthly butterfly survey with Irvine Ranch Conservancy, although most were duskywing skippers and I didn't get many shots. I saw my first...

Sights of February 2014

There is always something new to learn and that is what makes life endlessly enjoyable. In addition to the wonderful things I learn in the field (experience is the best teacher), I finished the last of a six week colored pencil drawing class and I started attending an Entomology and Arachnology Class. That, coupled with warmer weather and my long l...

Sights of December 2013

Highlights of the month include BIRDS, BIRDS, BIRDS, a few insects and spiders, and the International Space Station shot from the desert. I got a new Nikon D7100 camera which focuses faster, works better in low light, and takes a much sharper image than my prior camera. Between the new camera and winter migration I went a little wild shooting bird...

Common Wisdom

October 06, 2013  •  1 Comment
Common Wisdom (en español) “Once more I realized to what an extent earthly happiness is made to the measure of man. It is not a rare bird which we must pursue at one moment in heaven, at the next in our minds. Happiness is a domestic bird found in our own courtyards.” ― Nikos Kazantzakis We place a great value on the unique and the rare. Our cu...

Creature Comforts

July 23, 2013  •  Leave a Comment
Author's note: A little literary licence. This is just a little silliness for fun and may not be fully factual. Creature Comforts (no translation this time) I woke up feeling sluggish this morning. I guess I was a bit of night owl last night or maybe just drunk as a skunk. I cleared the frog out of my throat and looked at my crow's feet in the m...

Nature Helps Heal the Spirit

April 30, 2013  •  1 Comment
Nature Helps Heal the Spirit (en español) I went to my local nature center today and found my spirits lifted by sharing kind words with the people I met and appreciating the beauty of nature. Nature has a healing effect on the soul. I share my photos and love of nature to perhaps bring a smile to others. I am deeply disturbed by many sad and tr...

People, Fish, and Birds - A Tangled Tale

March 13, 2013  •  Leave a Comment
People, Fish, and Birds - A Tangled Tale (en español) I knew that the ponds in the park were stocked with fish, but never had thought about it, much less had seen it, until recently. It is an interesting dynamic and spectacle to behold. The California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) posts a 'Fish Planting' schedule. It gives the week when dif...

The Year of the Snake

February 13, 2013  •  Leave a Comment
The Year of the Snake (en español) The Chinese calendar says it is the year of the snake. I like almost all animals, but still I'm a bit afraid of snakes (and some others also). I have never found a dangerous one and do not know anyone personally who has be en bitten by a snake. However, our culture teaches us to be afraid. There are many ani...
