So when will the heat subside. For gosh sake we are well into October and I had to postpone a camping trip to the desert due to heat! Well at least there was a minor bit of rain - just enough to cancel my butterfly count. But I really can't complain. By the end of the month it cooled off a bit, the migratory birds are coming back, and I did go on m...

For those that are on Facebook, I have set up a public page where I post updates during the month. You can LIKE it here: https://www.facebook.com/KimMooreNaturalist Boy was it hot. How hot was it?...It was so hot that I barely got out this month! Most of my local shots are from my own yard and a few trips to local parks toward the end of the month...

I have an exhibit at the El Dorado Nature Center featuring California Landscapes/Habitats, which will be going for the entire month of September. Download a flyer. A highlight for me this month was participating in an invertebrate bioblitz with the Lorquin Entomological Society at Tejon Ranch. Tejon Ranch Conservancy partnered with the Lorquin Ent...

Lesson 1: Always carry a camera! I attended an event and almost didn't bring my camera. On my way out I saw black oystercatchers. Luckily I was parked close by with my camera in the trunk. I think this was the closest I've gotten to them and they only mildly took notice of people. My regular butterfly count kicked off the month with two less commo...

June was a very busy month for me. I finished my insect study at the nature center, finished my classes, finished my presentations at Audubon, and spent endless hours of phone calls for technical support (and I don't think I'm done yet). I am now looking forward to having the summer off! I take and post s ome photos because they are pretty or fun.

I started the month with adorable red foxes seen in San Pedro. Unfortunately, some scary people in the park cut short my photo session. Still, I caught mom and one of the pups. On my various local outings I ran into quite a few baby owls, woodpeckers, swallows, wrens, geese, and ducks all with their downy feathers and demanding attention from their...

Birds Nesting, Insects of all sorts, Oxnard, Catalina, and Joshua Tree! I love Southern California. I can't say that enough. From Desert to Ocean and everything in between. I am very fortunate to live here and get to see this beautiful state. I have just been certified through The Los Angeles Coastal California Master Naturalist Program. It was a w...

Counting Bighorn Sheep, Butterflies, and Birds While much of the country suffered from major cold and snow, here in Southern California we started to see Spring. With some much needed rain and warm to downright hot weather, the insects are coming out to play. We had something to count on my monthly butterfly count and my yard was popular with moths...

Baja Adventure

On Friday afternoon when I attended the second class of my California Naturalist Certification, I never would have guessed that twelve hours later I would be in a car with someone I had just met, driving to the border on route 600 miles down the Baja peninsula. The growing fire of date palm trees that lined the only road out was the only scary part...

Whales, Birds, and a Kitten January was rich with friends and family and a new kitten added to my home. Along with my two older cats, there has been much wildlife and animal behavior to watch and photograph inside my own home. However, with good weather and migratory birds and whales, I couldn't stay indoors. It was still too early to see anything...

Good bye 2014. You were a great year! What a way to end the year! Lots of local trips, the annual Audubon California Bird Count, my Monthly Butterfly Count, a road trip to Piute Ponds in the Mojave Desert, and a camping trip at Anza-Borrego in the Colorado Desert. All that and we finally got a heavy dose of well needed rain. Anza-Borrego Desert St...

Always something new! This month I converted my photo library to new technology (Lightroom), I visited a new park (Irvine Regional Park), and I added a new bird (Varied Thrush) to my life list. I also visited Oak Glen Preserve out near Yucaipa and made several trips to Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Oak Glen is known for apples, apple cider, and...

Happy Halloween! Autumn is well upon us which means fall colors, spiders, and migrating birds. This month, and for the next several months, I am trying to improve my birding skills. I started taking a birding class and am learning so much. I always enjoy developing new skills and learning something new. My photos reflect this focus. I visited Oak C...

I spent my September with lots of family gatherings, most notably my mother's 80th birthday celebration and a truly fabulous multi-day celebration of my son and new daughter-in-law's wedding! However, no matter how busy I am, I try to sneak in some time in nature (with my camera) to calm the soul and inspire the spirit. As I've often said, there is...
