Biodiversity hunts or "BioBlitzes" take place over a very short period and scientific experts, amateur naturalists, and park staff search for and try to identify all living things within a particular landscape.
Joshua Tree National Park held its 2012 biodiversity hunt at Fortynine Palms Oasis on April 27 and 28. I had the privilege of attending and these photos are my contribution. They have been sent to the park services for use as for education, on their websites, and for future events.
The 3-mile round trip trail proved challenging. The distance wasn't an issue, but an over 300 foot gain (twice) over some rocky terrain carrying a pack in the heat with no shade was a bit daunting. Hydrate!
