Tejon Ranch Invertebrate Bio"Bliss"

September 19, 2016  •  2 Comments
A BioBlitz is when a group of people, including experts, get together to identify as many different biological organisms as they can in a given area in a short period of time. These BioBlitzes serve several purposes from engaging the public in conservation to gathering scientific information. I have participated in a number of citizen science BioBl...

Local stuff: This month kept me closer to home, so I took my macro lens to the backyard. It is always a rewarding venture. In addition to my usual spiders and insects, I found a spittlebug just molted and shot some flies in flight. My friend found a beautiful mantid at the local park. We also saw antlions. They are just too fast to photograph! Look...

Highlights captured in pictures: Local stuff: I visited the LA River a couple of times and found the Black-necked stilts great fun to watch. These seemed to neglect their own chicks in favor of attacking young Mallards. Mother duck didn't do much. This went on endlessly. I don't think there were any serious injuries, but the Mallards eventually go...

I must say that this was a month of habitat diversity with Tide pools, Oak woodlands, Chapparal, Desert, Riparian Corridors, Mountain Pine Forrest and meadows. I love California! Highlights captured in pictures: Local stuff: My mother came to visit me from New York City, so I took her to enjoy some of California's lovely habitats. I briefly quest...

Highlights captured in pictures: Local stuff: Playing with Macro again I found lady beetles and some interesting insects as subjects in my yard. This seemed to be flycatcher month in the local parks, some catching butterflies and eating other insects. IRC Monthly Butterfly Count: A lovely day with the usual suspects. I am giving a joint presentat...

Sights of April 2016

Ah Spring! A joy to behold. I want to be outside every day and all day. I participated in a biodiversity city challenge between LA and SF. That got me out even more. The warblers and other migrants are coming through. Songs of courtship fill the air. Birds are picking up bits and pieces to make their nests. Birds are mating and protecting nests. Ba...

I had a whirlwind month visiting many fun places. Family from England came to visit and wanted to see the everything (well almost) in California and the United States in 2 weeks. We sent them to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon on their own but joined them for trips to Morro Bay, Joshua Tree National Park, and local trips including Whale Watching. It...

A busy month, as usual. I, along with my friend Mike, had the opportunity to talk to a girl scout troop about our native bees. I'll do anything for girl scout cookies! I also continued taking my class in bird sounds. Now that's a challenge! It has helped but I have a long way to go and certainly studying more would help. I have loved the field trip...

Sights of January 2016

I tried. I really tried, but the cold weather made for slim pickings when it came to spiders and insects. A few gratuitous butterflies and I'm afraid you will have to wait until next month to see what I find. Ah, the anticipation! On the other hand, there are lots and lots of good winter birds. I made a particular effort to get out frequently this...

Lot's of good birding to round out the year and a good butterfly count too! Highlights captured in pictures: Local stuff: All birds. I like trying to catch birds in flight and got some shots. Some birds, such as finches, posed and asked me to take their photos. Some birds are camera shy, such as the Sora and Ridgeway's Rail so I had to take a shot...

Happy Holidays to all. Thank you for a wonderful year and looking forward to sharing 2016 with you. I thank so many people for helping me with identifications, helping me learn new things, go new places, and m...

We've been having weird weather. Over 90 degrees on November 1 and spring and summer wildflowers blooming. Then back to Pacific Standard Time, getting dark early, cooler temperatures, and morning dew. Finally some good outdoor weather and then back to over 90 near the end of the month. I started the month with my butterfly count which once again p...

So when will the heat subside. For gosh sake we are well into October and I had to postpone a camping trip to the desert due to heat! Well at least there was a minor bit of rain - just enough to cancel my butterfly count. But I really can't complain. By the end of the month it cooled off a bit, the migratory birds are coming back, and I did go on m...

How hot was it?...It was so hot that I barely got out this month! Most of my local shots are from my own yard and a few trips to local parks toward the end of the month...

I have an exhibit at the El Dorado Nature Center featuring California Landscapes/Habitats, which will be going for the entire month of September. Download a flyer.
